An antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England in which she documents the treasures she finds buried in. When an intriguing letter summons her to the little village of Bewlay hidden in the countryside far from any other, she takes off on a train along with her friend to spend the day in Bewlay.
The mysterious figure who called her for help was absent upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obstinate in refusing access to the barrow and locals are suspicious of this lady going on her own, and (gasp!) wears trousers.
